I watched a google-video talk from Merlin Mann discussing his “Inbox Zero” ideology. I’ve had Gmail for 5 years or so now and I had never deleted or archived a message. I had thought that was the point of Gmail, that you never had to.
But, I decided to try to follow some of his advice to process all my emails in some way. I was already using filters and labels to keep social network updates out of my face, but I went ahead and archived everything in my inbox that wasn’t “Starred”.
It’s unfortunate that Gmail doesn’t have a way to deal with more than 50 mails at a time, because highlighting 5,000 emails 50 at a time and hitting the “Archive” button was a pain.
So now I’m at “Inbox 20” and I’m frightened because I don’t know how to see my old emails without searching for something particular in them. SCARY. Hopefully the next emotion will be “liberated” but right now I am stuck in “overwhelming dread”.
